Mark Hinshaw BArch MUP FAIA FAICP

Mark Hinshaw is a retired architect and urban designer with more than forty years of experience in cities and towns throughout the United States. He worked in public agencies, directing urban design policies, programs, and projects. As a consultant, he advised communities about city center development, urban design framework plans, streetscape projects, public spaces, and design-oriented codes. He has developed design guidelines for numerous jurisdictions that focus on the public realm and how adjacent development can support walkability and social life.  Mark headed many planning and design teams.

Mark had a 30-year career as a journalist and author, writing hundreds of articles on urban development and publishing four books on urban design. He has written for Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Planning Magazine, Places, ‘scape, and other journals. For twelve years he had a regular column in The Seattle Times. Most recently, he was a frequent contributor to crosscut.com, an on-line daily magazine of civic affairs in the Seattle region and received an award from the Society of Professional Journalists. He was also on the adjunct faculty for the University of California, Davis.  He is a Fellow of both the American Institute of Architects and the American Institute of Certified Planners.

Mark now lives in the ancient hilltown of Santa Vittoria in Matenano, in the region of Le Marche, Italy and shares his Italian adventures in his blog.
